VoiceWaves Newspaper Issue #1

Aug. 21, 2014 / By

Introducing the inaugural issue of our community wellness print publication! Three years ago New America Media launched VoiceWaves, a youth-led community news website dedicated to engaging local young people in journalism, amplifying the voices of Long Beach residents, and shining a light on the health disparities that exist in our communities.

Although created primarily by youth and young adults, VoiceWaves is a platform intended for the entire community. Through our stories, we hope to explore and begin discussions on topics that are challenging, topics that may not always be easy to confront.

In this first issue, we decided to tackle the issue of student debt: Several youth tell us about their experience finding jobs and affording loan payments after graduation; and in another story, we learn about how oil drilling can increase earthquake risks in Long Beach, the most fracked city in California. We also explore the challenges immigrant elderly folks face in their road to retirement, as well as sex education and teen pregnancy. Also, VoiceWaves beat reporter Michael Lozano interviewed local families to talk about how deportation has affected them.

We will be distributing 10,000 copies in English, Spanish and Khmer to local restaurants and cafes and to our community partners. If you would like to pick up a stack to distribute, please contact Michelle Zenarosa at [email protected].

VoiceWaves is a Long Beach youth-led journalism and media-training project. The youth, ages 16-24, are learning to report, write, and create digital journalism content. Their reports will raise awareness of community health issues and activate change.
