LONG BEACH >> Uudam Tran Nguyen, a Vietnamese artist who splits his time between Southern California and his homeland, quietly recalled his inspiration for a short video he made about the motorbike riders in his native country, while watching the film Thursday at the Long Beach City College Art Gallery.

The volume of his voice barely rose above the musical backdrop to “Waltz of the Machine Equestrians,” a 3 ½-minute piece that features rows of riders clad in rain coats of bright and various hues, linked together to create a wave of color along a stretch of street in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon.
