Shout out to VoiceWaves youth participant, Yvie Jett (she/they), for producing, filming, and editing this recap reel from the 2024 Long Beach Trans Pride Event (@transpridelongbeach)

Yvie connected with trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive youth and adult community members, capturing their reflections on this sacred queer gathering and the gender-affirming practices and rituals that bring them joy.

This past weekend, Yvie participated in CCEJ’s annual Gender Justice Camp (@ccejlove), where they shared this video with an audience of over 100 youth from Long Beach!

We're currently recruiting for both of our local programs! VoiceWaves and the Youth Suicide Prevention Program are both open to youth ages 14 to 24 who live in Long Beach. Both programs are free, and experience is not required!

You can sign up for both programs via the link in our bio!

VoiceWaves is our youth media program where youth learn how to produce journalism about local issues through skills like writing, interviewing, photography, and podcasting! Our youth members publish stories to inform the community about news related to education, the environment, housing, city politics, and much more!

Our Youth Suicide Prevention Program is our newest program! YSPP is a mental health awareness program where local youth are learning to create social media content, a zine, and fun and informative workshops to help educate their peers about positive mental health coping skills and how to help prevent youth suicide.

Today is election day! Voting centers are open across Long Beach for you to cast your ballot or drop off your vote by mail ballot.

If you're still looking for some information on the items on your ballot, we've got you covered for Measure RW. The measure is an effort to increase the minimum wage for hotel workers at hotels with 100 or more rooms. To understand more about the measure, we spoke with Gabriel Perez, a community organizer with Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy's (LAANE) campaign called Long Beach for a Just Economy. In this story, VoiceWaves contributor Abel Reyes (@abelreyeslb) shares some of the life story of Oum Ry, a Cambodian kickboxing legend who runs the Long Beach Khmer Kickboxing Center.
